Ṣalāh — The Daily Prayers
The five daily prayers — Fajr, Ẓuhr, ʿAṣr, Maghrib, ʿIshāʾ — and why Ṣalāh is Islam's most important expression of connection with Allah.
Connecting with God Through Worship.
The Islamic faith is based on the belief that individuals have a direct and personal connection with God. One of the most important expressions of this relationship is through the daily practice of Ṣalāh, or prayer.
The five daily prayers
Muslims around the world face Makkah — Islam’s holiest city — and offer five daily prayers at specified times:
- Fajr — Dawn, before sunrise
- Ẓuhr — Midday, after the sun has passed its zenith
- ʿAṣr — Mid-afternoon
- Maghrib — Just after sunset
- ʿIshāʾ — Nighttime
In addition, there is a Friday congregational service (Jumuʿa) which is also required for men.
Where and how to pray
Although Ṣalāh can be performed individually, it is considered meritorious to perform it with others or in a group. It is permissible to pray at home, at work, or even outdoors — however, it is considered especially important to perform Ṣalāh in a mosque.
The purpose of Ṣalāh
The primary purpose of Ṣalāh is to act as a form of communication and remembrance of Allāh. Through the recitation of al-Fātiḥa — the first Sūrah of the Qur’an — Muslims stand before Allāh and offer gratitude, praise, and ask for guidance along the Straight Path. The daily act of worship serves as a reminder to put God and submission to His will above all else, thereby centring one’s life around Allāh.
Worship also serves as a formal method of Dhikr (remembrance of Allāh). The Qur’an states:
“The true believers are those who feel fear in their hearts when Allāh is mentioned. And when His Revelations are recited to them, they find their faith strengthened.”
In addition to its spiritual benefits, Ṣalāh is also considered a means of restraining a believer from social wrongs and moral deviance. According to a Ḥadīth in Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī, Prophet Muḥammad ﷺ considered Ṣalāh “the best deed.”
Embrace the daily practice of Ṣalāh and experience the transformative power of connecting with the divine. Strengthen your faith, restrain yourself from negativity, and find peace and serenity in worshipping the Almighty. Let the five daily prayers be a time to renew your connection with Allāh and rejuvenate your soul.
